Greywater (2008)

I tip the last drops of water into my mouth and rinse out my glass, steering the tap lever up and left. Fluid thunders out of the pipe like tubular ocean – the Amazonian sound-spray filling my ears. The weight of a hundred micro-storms splice over my hand as if my knuckles were river-rocks. I stare into the black drain-hole as the raindrop tapestry pours like a dragon-wound, sluicing in with dish grit, and dissipating like a star. It’s been eight earth seconds and only now are the artificial cogs of man-churned electricity effecting the water. Gradually the temperature rises – so gradually my hand is deceived and the atmosphere of my skin throbs like a dessert. I grab the glass and thrust it under. The tap drills deep into the little tank, the hull bursting forth like a devastated dam, forcing core layers to dislodge and spew over the rim in a volcanic avalanche. My fingers drop the glass and yank down on the emergency brake. The cable is snapped off with a pipe-trembling jolt. The surface of the glass teeters like a troubled sea, and is still. A single droplet hangs from the tap. With the weight of sunlight it hangs, falls and disappears into the saltless depths below.

Like all Australians, I help my home produce over 350 litres of grey water every day. Grey water is household water that can be safely reused. For example, keeping a bucket in the shower and then using it to water the garden, or make cordial for guests you don’t like. Unfortunately my share house doesn’t do this. Unless you count the cupful of tears I cried after watching ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ I used it to nourish a punnet of sunflower seedlings.

I watched the aforementioned documentary last week, and have been oscillating between dogged enthusiasm for change and annihilating pessimism ever since. A well-meaning, well-groomed Al Gore while stating it isn’t too late to save the earth, also dropped footage of a C.G.I. polar bear slipping off a decaying iceberg and paddling away to drown. That scene alone was responsible for my CO² emissions being cut by 40%. I was so depressed I couldn’t get out of bed.

In my early teens, when the term ‘greenhouse effect’ was first bandied around, I had elaborate fantasies about just how bad things would have to get before my life was directly interrupted. Read: visions of knee-deep street water, sixty degree days and Neighbours being interrupted by emergency bulletins stating that a massive environmental overhaul was going to take place city by city. S.W.A.T teams bursting through doors and beating up air conditioners, dragging people out of showers and throwing paddock size blankets over service stations. My theory was that until something this dramatic occurred, how could mankind digest a purely word-based threat to something as monumental as its ‘taken for granted since 1703’ existence. Ten years on and a ‘Convenient Untruth’ U.S. Government still can’t sign Kyoto, demand for water is set to double every 21 years, and three billion gatecrashers are expected in 2050.

Sometimes I feel like the polar bear, slipping around on my dwindling iceberg of optimism, searching for a once plentiful supply of hope-fish. Perhaps we are on the way out. Perhaps this simply is the best we can do. In the share house of the world, we could do with an angry note from God right about now, blu-takked to the clouds. It’s either that or we wait for the great big house meeting in the sky.

Food Slap Club (2008)

Who hasn’t watched Fight Club and thought: “Yeah – maybe if I smacked my friends around a bit I’d alleviate some of this pedestrian, inner-city tension. Maybe I am getting a bit soft. Have I ever even been in a fight? When was the last time I tried a ninja kick at book club, or a full nelson at Friday night drinks?” Naturally, you’d never follow through. Fighting is, as the aforementioned movie realistically depicts, quite bloody. We’ve all got work and school tomorrow, who can afford the black eyes and savaged teeth? No, Fight Club would just never work here, fortunately I’ve thought of a consumer friendly ‘Fight Club lite’ variation.

It’s called Food Slap Club. The rules are simple. The first rule of Food Slap Club is talk about Food Slap club. It’s free publicity! I’m not an idiot. The second rule is don’t go for the face. The third rule is you have to wear an orange tie on Thursdays. No reason. Food Slapping can happen wherever you like, there are no leaders or secret meetings – it’s just a vaguely antisocial subculture that can coexist within society in the same way as flashmobs, or the spoken word scene.

Food Slapping consists of knocking food out of someone’s hands. The best way to do this is suddenly and firmly – really send that plate flying. Then, just walk away. There’s no need for taunts or ribbing – you’ve said enough. It’s best to avoid eye contact as well. Your victims should never see you coming, or going; they’ll be too busy picking up their spread-eagled stir-fry. Going back through my own past, I can count many instances when a few Food Slaps a day could have really calmed my nerves.

Uni is a great example. Picture this: You’re right under the hammer for a communication essay due last week, it’s the day before Austudy, you’re broke, and coming down with the flu. You wander through the uni bar only to see some jock with a sausage roll coming towards you. You stop, wait till he’s level and WHAP! You backhand the sausage roll straight out of his hands. It flies out of sight, skidding across the dance floor in its own sauce. The guy is left standing like a stunned gorilla. You take a defiant breath and keep walking. You feel stronger than you have in years.

Some more examples: You’re out late a Saturday night, some Supre budgie is squawking away near a takeaway stand. Her slice of pizza: Gone! You’re on your way home from work, some emo wanders out of a fish and chip place awkwardly nursing a tray of burgers. SMACK! Burgers are no more. In a fancy restaurant, the smug yuppy behind you puts a forkful of seafood up to his mouth. SLAPPITY! A Federer forehand sends his morsel flying away with a satisfying clatter. Waiter! Bill please.

You’ll feel like the Neo of the food world. It’s as if you can see the molecules between your hand and the food. They were meant to be together! So next time you’re feeling under the pump and just can’t explain that burning void, avoid your usual routine of vices and self-loathing, and just knock that ice cream right out of that god-damn snotty little kid’s hand! Food Slap Club UNITE!

Band members and extras were filmed against a green screen, meaning the clip will be a psychedelic affair full of effects, paying homage to the fit-inducing colour clashes of the 60’s and 70’s. • The Happiest Boy snuck into #8312 in Triple J’s Hottest 100, narrowly beating Ben Cousins’ novelty single ‘I’m no good at scrabble ‘cos I’ve got a whole rack of E’s,’ and Crazy Frog’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U.’

• I found an authentic Ossie Ostrich doll for sale at Lost & Found Markets in Collingwood and managed to not buy it.

• Job prospects seem to be looking up. (Thanks to everyone who emailed suggestions.) I’m doing a trial at Circa, my favourite vintage shop in Melbourne. As the fashion consultant for the film clip, I rekindled my passion for mod fabrics. (I now judge second hand ties and suits partially by their brands – there’s full circle for you.)

• Golden Gaytime appears to be the slowburn sleeper underground cult song of the Autumn. It’s the only track to get an airing on JJJ this year and for the first time in three years is beating ‘I’m So Post Modern’ in Google searches.

• The latest Frankie has the most of my stuff there’s ever been, including the cover feature article. I am also pictured in a hard hitting Redken advertorial, looking, as my partner’s Mother described, ‘like a robot.’

• I’ve ‘discovered’ Ebay, the way one ‘discovers’ cigarettes. Have I been setting my alarm for five in the morning to bid on things? Yes. COI. (cries on inside)

• Our sharehouse now has Mario Kart 64. This will probably be the final LapTopping.

• In Melbourne hungering for good coffee? My pals Lauren and Tom have opened up a glorious café called Mixed Business. It’s at 486 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill next to the Terminus pub, and does breakfast everyday bar Mondays. Their hot rolls are scrumptious.

• I got my highest ever score on Galaga. Level 12. 68120. Off $1.

• Someone I barely know added someone they barely know as a friend.

1. I create too much ‘grey water’ waiting for the bathroom cold tap to turn cold. In my head a polar bear weeps while playing the mandolin.

4. I come back from the post office realising I still have toothpaste around my mouth.

5. On the tram a woman in huge sunglasses and a sour face bangs my leg on the way through to her seat. She says sorry without looking in my direction.

6. I sit down to eat lunch and Ready Steady Cook is on.

7. I check my bank balance on my mobile phone.

8. I check my side profile in the mirror. The back of my hair has become mushroomy.

9. The taxi driver says the sentence ‘Which way do you want me to go?’

10. I am outbid on the vintage 1950’s Yahtzee set with original scorepad.

PERTH INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL TOUR DIARY

I recently had the pleasure of receiving the most rockstar treatment ever for a gig. Secured after some trusty work from my manager, Saskia, The Perth International Arts Festival flew myself and the band over, putting us up at a four star hotel, and offering a generous gig fee. I happily signed the contract, adding in my own subclause that I couldn’t complain once or get moody while on the trip, or I would be deemed a corrupt defect of a human being and my person would be returned immediately to a licensed dealership for intensive maintenance and high-level poking in the chest and head.

Andy (bass) and Hugh (drums), two of the loveliest boys one could ever hope to meet, joined me in the pleasant surrounds of Melbourne airport. Advice to travellers – if you wander off towards the International lounge, there’s an arcade that has the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game from the early 90’s. It’s really faded and the sound has almost gone but you can still conjure up the teenage pleasure of belting Bebop and Rocksteady around. (Bebop says ‘Say your prayers Toitles’ in his Brooklyn warthog accent.)

I’d breached contract by morning tea. I asked for a juice with orange, mango, pineapple and ginger, and the girl deadpanned ‘We don’t put mango in our juices.’ I then asked for a muffin to which she monovenommed ‘you can only get them with a coffee.’
‘I won’t have a muffin then,’ I said curtly as if we were a couple having a row. I looked down at the sign which clearly stated individual muffin prices as well as the coffee combo and wondered if all the Seinfeld I’ve been watching lately has made me more obstreperous.

On the plane I’d watch Andy’s arm panel to see which radio station he was on. This quirk is similar to my habit of umming and aahhing about food until someone else orders, and copying them. Andy and Hugh both forgot to pre-order vegetarian meals, but were very good about it.

We knew we’d have a driver pick us up at the airport, and remonstrated on the potential size and nature of the sign they might be holding. There was no sign in the end, apart from the kind smile and effortless friendliness from the trolley wielding assistant music coordinator, Kat.

We were driven to the Medina, a swish hotel with pool, sauna and gym. Our room was lush, earning a ‘mad-dog’ from Hugh. We noted the convenience of the flat screen TV for throwing out the window, and spared a thought for bands in the 80’s, having to wrestle with big fat Sanyo’s. For a while it looked like there was only one King size bed, and I pictured the whole band together in our pyjamas reading Harry Potter, unfortunately, Hugh and Andy found the room with two singles.

The soundcheck alone is in the top five biggest gigs I’ve ever done. The Beck’s Bar (named after the beer, not my favourite scientologist) is an outdoor amphitheatre with a huge stage with arching canvas roof, and ample couch and seating space to fit 600. Note to musicians: when you’ve got a separate sound technician doing your foldback, you know you’re on a good wicket. We also had our own stage manager, a chipper bloke called Dan who’d just finished touring with the Klaxons, which sent streetpress writing Andy into an indie spin. I was overwhelmed, and when he asked where I wanted the guitar amp I looked down and played an E minor for ages. Conversations with the sound guy tended to go.

Me: Can I have a little more vocal?
Me: Can I have a little more guitar?
Me: Now I’ll need more vocal again.
Me: Whoops, can’t hear the guitar now.
Me: Hang on. Less of everything.
Me: Hmm. More vocal?
Soundguy:

One conversation went like this:
Me: (with the resolve of a weak milo) Yeah just make sure the vocals are right out there.
Soundguy: (like he’d seen me coming for miles.) Yep.

We were given our own backstage dressing room, complete with lightbulb adorned mirrors, and – the real crown jewels to any ailing indie band – a fruit and cheese platter. We could have wept, and if we had I’m sure the organisers would have had a work experience boy dabbing at our tears. We looked at the running order. Our job was to follow Laurence Leung’s Breakdancing Show, acting as the ‘after party band.’ We were amused that in between sets the stage would be handed over to ‘DJ Mixed CD.’

During Laurence’s show I did my usual complex array of pre-gig faffery. Walking to and from points. Checking on things that are already there. Going to the toilet. Tuning my guitar. Assaulting my hair in and out of shape. We hit the stage around 10:45pm. My first instinct was to be threatened by the return of ‘Dancefloor Gap’ (cue 60’s horror music) meaning that all the seats from Laurence’s show had been removed, leaving twenty metres of darkness before the first rows of audience. Being discreetly professional, I forged on. It wasn’t an easy gig. For a band used to playing stages the size of a bathtowel, this was Glastonbury, and sonically, it was like playing in a bouncy castle inside a cave. My lack of experience playing large open-air venues, evident in the struggle to stay in time with Hugh, multiplied by the mental awareness of the importance of the gig that I was immeasurably fortunate to be playing – left me a tad unstable.

The gig hadn’t gone to plan, as gigs almost always don’t (when you don’t have a plan), and at risk of reprising my role as Captain Knobticket the third, I was taking it inevitably hard. In all kinds of emotional legal trouble, I lay spread-emu’d on my king size bed in a fitful state, unable to commit to one of the four goose-down pillows. My head was an eight-lane surrealist grand-prix of panic and guilt. Stained glass screensavers battered my eyes, as ghouls took down the portraits of my optimism, shredded them up and spat the omni-coloured paste through anti-matter gaped gums.

The next day I was still low. (Occasionally I escape to a reality where I’m a slowcore band from Minnesota). With Kat in tow we went to the Little Creatures Brewery and restaurant. This is a fine place. While waiting for our meals I witnessed a guy throw up while walking to the bathroom, right onto the back of a girl sitting down. Some of it got in her hair. Afterwards we wandered around a huge market in Perth’s better looking cousin, Fremantle. In the hippy trinket stall I stared blankly at some leering plastic fruit with faces. In the music shop I found a CD version of my favourite JJ Cale album, Troubadour. W.A. has a rich economy and on the drive home I noticed the superchrome ute bonnets, glinting in the sun.

Before the gig Hugh would warm up his arms by tapping away on a Brown metal plate. I admired his discipline, and presumed it was part of his study at Music College. I tried to imagine what my equivalent would be. Perhaps banging my head against a similar plate, or having a model of myself that I could take out the back and throw around. Gigs played on a day when I’m in a particularly bad mood tend to go better, and so was the case tonight. Learning from the mistakes of the previous eve, I was able to deliver a relaxed, controlled performance with plenty of Perth-centric banter. The crowd were a little more plentiful and vocal, and there were even a couple of dancers. I pulled my lead out of the D.I with a grateful chest. A good gig means I get to have a good night, like a standard human being. A good gig means the ball has rolled onto the same colour as my chips, and I’m rewarded for my investment.

We were totally pig rock. We drank the rider, stuffing the excess into bags, and went for a long trek to find the next venue for our debates about Terminator Two and Facebook. We ended up at ‘Amplifier Bar’ which is a big indie fortress that can teach you a thing or two about cool even from its Myspace. (Conclusion – high waisted jeans are in but aren’t flattering on everyone.) Our entourage danced to LCD Soundsystem, and hung around on tables watching Laurence Leung do magic tricks including making a cigarette move with his finger. I sat back and worked on my trick of making one slowly disappear with my mouth.

At 5am we went to a place called ‘Fast Eddie’s’ which is a powerhouse of late night eating and even has a burger called the ‘no meat burger’ which has double egg and double cheese instead of meat! Vegetarian high five! The name of the shop stuck in our heads, and was the main lyric of an impromptu hip-hop sing-a-long led by Hugh on the walk home. We ended up back at the hotel for a 7am swim – feeling more and more like The Flaming Lips kicking it in Brazil or something. Highlights included seeing the arms and legs festival of a black-jeaned Andy running at 60km an hour on a treadmill, and a dozy Hugh sitting in the sauna with his steaming red wine saying ‘this was not a good idea.’

For a change this year I spent New Year’s Eve on the foreshore of my hometown Burnie, Tasmania. While the lengthy stares from primitive locals and a muddy mix on the Bon Jovi cover band (Bad Medicine) were downers, the midnight fireworks were a plus. It doesn’t matter where you are, geographically or mentally, fireworks are always a good idea.

The ripe whiff of gunpowder and atomic whip cracks send your spirits down a psychedelic wormhole into the victory lap of your childhood. Pixel grenades paint bomb the dimensions in rainbow basted electro pastels. There’s a synergy in the synapses, as the cartoon factory of your memories explodes inside a mirror ball of kaleidoscopic buckshot. Your gaze centred on a Vegas-orange solar waterfall, your arm around a companion, your mouth cool with beer: For a burst of time your life feels dynamic – your plans achieved, your slate cleared – with official pardon from the cosmos, this is your delegated ‘night off’ from yourself.

The neon green forest of exploding peas showers down on the sea, followed by the sub-bass catapult of laser-red super whistles. This is the atomic kick start to the best year of your life. This is a fully loaded robo chimney-sweep blasting away the cobwebs of the past. This is some Michel Gondry inspired visual representation of your mind map – the ideas and dreams that are spiraling out of your brain at the speed of sound. The options, the choices, the realities.

New Year’s Eve always makes me dramatic. I think I might have a touch of synestheasia, because I visualise being at the end of the year as if I am standing on the end of a platform. It’s a vector graphic, like being inside a vintage computer game, or on the set of Tron. Standing on the end of the platform feels like being on stage, and on the strike of 12 I get the urge to throw my head to the heavens and scream – ‘this year we’re going to fucking make it!’ This is something I did for NYE 1998. Who was I talking to? Myself – and probably God. New Year’s Eve, plus beer, makes me very dramatic, and competitive. It’s me against the world. Again.

For me, New Year’s Eve is like finishing a level of the 80’s computer game 1942. After you’ve shot the last couple of planes down, you cruise back down to your landing pad. Here, you are given the chance to relax your sweaty grip on the joystick and have some lemonade. The screen shows the percentages of how accurately you’ve shot down planes, followed by how many stages you have left to complete. You are then sent skywards with a characteristic loop the loop, and given a few precious seconds to cruise solo over the ocean, before the first wave of gun ships swoop in.

New Year’s Eve is an important spiritual checkpoint. It’s necessary for me to be able to breathe an air of relief over the past, and wipe an excited sleeve over the window ahead. I need to light the fuse of my optimism, and send a disco dandelion of mini-suns cannoning out over the horizon. It’s a delicate, beautiful sprawl of colours and energy – a vibrant pulse for the galaxy of my personality.
